The Truth About Fats and Weight Loss

The surprising truth about fats and weight loss is that as it turns out, there’s simply no correlation.  In fact, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, our collective waistlines continue to expand despite the fact that most Americans are now getting fewer of their calories from fat than we did a few decades ago.

But how can that be?

The reason is that weight loss (or gain) is really about calories – regardless of the source (proteins, carbohydrates, or fats).  Americans have tried to give up fats, yet our bodies continue to crave this nutrient, so we’ve replaced it with larger quantities of carbohydrates and refined sugars. The result? Weight gain.

OK, so how much fat you should you eat per day?

According the American Heart Association, about 30% of your total daily calories should come from fats. That’s a full one-third of your calories!

So a diet comprising only skinless chicken, salmon and steamed vegetables, while perhaps sounding good to the average person, really isn’t healthy. Our bodies need fats to perform. It’s just that all fats are not equally beneficial. Some are healthier than others.

Fish oil, for example, is far healthier for you than that box of Ho Hos.

Two Surprising Ingredients For Losing Weight

#1 is Fiber. The role of fibre in our diet is to keep the right amount of water in our intestines. This makes our digestive systems work more efficiently and helps to keep us regular. Thus, just eating enough fiber may help you feel slimmer in a mere day or so. Fibre also has even more important health benefits. There is also evidence that fiber in the diet can help in preventing stroke and heart disease, ease the effects of diabetes, and may even directly help in weight loss.

#2 is Water. We all know that getting an adequate amount of water is essential for our health. But in fact, many people simply don’t get enough. What’s more, if you’re chronically dehydrated, your body will retain water in unflattering places. If you make sure that you get plenty of fluids you can start visibly trimming down in as little as a day. Also keep in mind that the more you exercise, the more water you need.

Here’s a tip: Drink one glass of water before your meal. This will help with digestion and at the same time provide for a sensation of fullness in your stomach that will keep you from overeating. In addition, doing this in combination with eating slowly will allow you to stop eating when you feel satisfied, not when you have already eaten too much.

The Easy Way To Keep Fit and Burn Calories

Did you know that in order to lose a single pound of fat, you must burn approximately 3500 calories?

That sounds like a lot of calories (and it is!) and you certainly wouldn’t want to try to burn all 3500 calories in a single day. However, by doing it right, and by taking it one day at a time, you can and will reach your weight loss goal.

Diet and Exercise

Think of diet as the defense and exercise as the offense. For every calorie you avoid taking in, you have less to burn off through exercise. Eating right is critical and makes the job of losing weight so much easier. It really is remarkable how quickly the pounds melt away just from eating a healthy diet (see my newsletter on the diet Jessica Alba has followed for years. She eats very well and stays slim easily. You can do it too!)

My favorite form of exercise is one that doesn’t carry with it the possibility of injury to my back, hip, and knee joints. It’s something that everyone can easily do every day. It doesn’t require any expensive equipment and a pleasant byproduct of doing it is that one gets to breathe fresh air and work on their suntan at the same time.

It’s walking of course!

But by walking I don’t mean simply strolling along like an 89 year-old man with a cane. I mean brisk walking. Walking like you had someplace important to be and you were trying not to be late. Walking with purpose.

Doing this for 45 minutes each and every day (begin with just 15-20 minutes per day and then build on that) without fail will work absolute wonders for you. By as soon as day 3 of adopting this program you will feel so wonderfully relaxed and mellow you will think that somebody has slipped a Valium into your tea. You will sleep like a baby. And you will lose weight (to say nothing of toning your muscles and lowering your blood pressure).

Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin were all avid walkers and all, coincidentally, lived well into their 80′s at a time when the average life span for a male was half as many years.

Try it for just a week and see if I’m not right. But be warned, you’ll soon be hooked. It’s like nature’s little drug.
